Voting on the Issues

Several people have wondered aloud with me how Christians should vote this election. Certainly many Christians will vote for both presidential candidates. Some Christians on both sides of the election can't understand how another Christian could see the issues differently than they do. I don't believe a Christian's preferred candidate should cast doubts on her sincerity of faith. My understanding of Scripture and current worldview lead me to choose one candidate over another, as does everyone's.

Regardless of the outcome of this election, the Kingdom of Heaven will survive. Of course, since we've survived bad leadership in the past, I'm confident that even our nation will survive, regardless of the outcome of the election, but more importantly I'm confident in the survival and continued thriving of God's Kingdom.

Nevertheless, Christians ought to desire to participate in the political discussions and processes, at least in my mind. Shouldn't we weigh each issue carefully, through our lens of knowing God and being salt and light in the world?

To that end, Sojourners has published a Christian Voters' Issue Guide, which seems to be a well thought out overview of many of the hot button issues our country is currently facing.

It's a great read to spur some thought. Of course, hopefully all Christians want to help the poor, reduce abortions, etc., ... the tough questions arise when we discuss how to go about doing those things.

Eric...

Come on man. Seriously? Even you can admit this left-leaning publication and blog is nothing more than an activist extreme left religious group using the platform of religion to further thier political cause. This is no different than the extreme right religious groups like John Hagee and the like.

The so-called voter guide is nothing more than a memo telling people how to vote, what to think, and misusing scripture to do it.

Just look at their frequently asked questions:

I mean it reads like a liberal talking points memo.

Pretty disingenuous I'd say.

?

Which part is misusing Scripture to arrive at some conclusion that conflicts with scripture? The reduction of abortions? The caring for the poor? The ending of sex trade? The restraint of violence?

Now we can disagree about how to go about achieving these things. You might opine that the best way to help the poor is to reduce gov't regulation and move towards a free market. But using Scripture to frame our thought on these issues is not out of bounds.

Ohhh - sign me up, I want to be a communist, er socialist too.

Seriously - I will stand for capital punishment, non-distribution of wealth, etc. You think left-ers are going to take away a woman's control of her own body, take away her choice to kill her unborn child? or stand for marriage (God's marriage - man with woman?)....That does not even start to address the screwed up welfare system we have now.

On the other hand: Do I believe we should break our backs and do everything we can to help our fellow man? Darn straight I do! Every human being should be helping and giving and striving, praying and caring for each other. Trying to break down the racial barriers, ending poverty, and lots of etc...

Brian, I'm glad you are a voice of reason in my world.

Yes but we need voices of reason in the real world. :)

Kidding of course.
