Dr. Seuss, Theologian: Horton Hears a Who
If you haven't yet seen this film, I suggest you do. It was entertaining for Dixie and me, as well as the kids. It includes lots of humor on several different levels. Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, and Carol Burnett are terrific as Horton, the Mayor of Whoville, and the Kangaroo who seeks the destruction of Horton's beloved speck.
More than the entertainment value of the film, it's a wonderful parable of God's ongoing narrative. Horton the elephant comes across a speck of dust that holds a whole civilization of Whos. The Mayor of Whoville and Horton find an avenue of communication and build a relationship of love and respect.
The local jungle's Kangaroo doesn't want Horton's belief and love for an improbable civilization selling a false hope to the youth of the jungle and, so sets out to destroy the speck that carries the Who people. Out of love, Horton remains faithful to the Whos. He risks all in a self-sacrificing love to save the Who people.
It's a beautiful story that can't help but pull you into what God is doing in our world. His faithfulness is clear as he sets out to bring salvation to the world.
